Throwback year 2021: #BlackGirlFoodCritic “TASTEmakers Series”, honoring Black owned restaurants that have been in business in Detroit more than 30 years! This installment spotlights Vicki’s BBQ, known for their charcoal pit BBQ Ribs, chicken and secret recipe fried shrimp, established in 1964!
The charcoal Pit smoked Chicken was tender & delicious, the Cole slaw was sweet tasting & the secret recipe fried shrimp was amazing! Everything was super yummy!
The owners, Fairfield and Vicki Butler opened a diner called Loretta’s in 1956, changed it to “Vicki’s Shrimp Hut”, and after adding ribs to the menu in 1964, the name was changed to Vicki’s BBQ. One day a customer told them they needed a better tasting BBQ sauce and offered The Butlers their family’s secret BBQ recipe. The Butlers made their changes to the BBQ sauce and rest is history! Vicki’s sweet tomato and vinegar based BBQ is super yummy, I was licking my fingers - didn’t want to waste any of it!
Vicki’s BBQ, 3845 W Warren, Southwest Detroit. Counter take out only, call ahead orders accepted. #ajamugroupfoodtour #ajamugroup @TheAjamuGroup @cherylajamu #blackownedbusiness

2021 Throwback: Black Girl Food Critic Fav post, enjoy! #BlackGirlFoodCritic went to BBQ Central restaurant located in Detroit, home of the Beef Ribs!  When I arrived at BBQ Central, I was greeted by Grill master Shawn, who was cooking ribs outdoors on four supersized gills located near the restaurant. Very friendly, and suggested some menu items that were popular. The beef ribs were VERY tender, and the BBQ sauce was yummy!  The cabbage was buttery and tender, the candied yams melt in your mouth, the macaroni and cheese was delicious!  BBQ Central is currently take-out only, so I plated my meal. The restaurant décor had a cultural “graffiti wall”, a collage of pictures from back in the day of favorite people, places and things in Detroit and African American life. BBQ Central has multiple locations in Michigan, I visited 12729 West 7 Mile Road, Detroit.   #BlackGirlFoodCritic @cherylajamu #ajamugroupfoodtour #SupportSmallBusiness #detroit @TheAjamuGroup ...
