Throwback year 2021: #BlackGirlFoodCritic “TASTEmakers Series”, honoring Black owned restaurants that have been in business in Detroit more than 30 years! This installment spotlights Vicki’s BBQ, known for their charcoal pit BBQ Ribs, chicken and secret recipe fried shrimp, established in 1964!
The charcoal Pit smoked Chicken was tender & delicious, the Cole slaw was sweet tasting & the secret recipe fried shrimp was amazing! Everything was super yummy!
The owners, Fairfield and Vicki Butler opened a diner called Loretta’s in 1956, changed it to “Vicki’s Shrimp Hut”, and after adding ribs to the menu in 1964, the name was changed to Vicki’s BBQ. One day a customer told them they needed a better tasting BBQ sauce and offered The Butlers their family’s secret BBQ recipe. The Butlers made their changes to the BBQ sauce and rest is history! Vicki’s sweet tomato and vinegar based BBQ is super yummy, I was licking my fingers - didn’t want to waste any of it!
